Mia could hear the sound of her own heartbeat crashing in her ears. Her breath stuck in her throat as she watched the door begin to open. Inch by inch.

“Jack?” she called out, jumping to her feet. “Is that you?”

The door stopped moving.

Mia looked wildly around the room for anything she might use to defend herself. But there was nothing.

Suddenly she heard the footfall of someone running down the hall.

Away from her room.

Mia lurched to the door and jerked it open. She stepped out in the hall but there was nobody there.

Someone had been trying to get into her room.

Her heart thudded in her chest, her breath racing until she thought she would hyperventilate.

She looked at the doorknob from the hallway side and without thinking first she reached for it. The second she touched it, the electrifying tremor of evil etched its way up from her fingers to her shoulders where it vibrated into a stomach-turning nausea.

She shook her hand to dissipate the sensation, her fear ratcheting up by the second.

What she had felt in her fingers was the intent to commit murder.

The killer had come for her.

And the killer was a woman.
